Marine Life: Butterfly, anemone, giant trigger fish, snapper, cuttlefish, octopus, lobster, prawns, neudi branch, magnificent slug, twin magnificent slug and white tip reef sharks.

Highlights: 10 minutes by boat from the Bali Jet Set beach. Beautiful reef dive with colourful coral fish, soft corals and gigantic table corals.

Comments: This is a gentle dive and is excellent for introductory and beginner divers. Great for Open Water Courses. Also very good for night diving.

Location: Three sister islands off the east coast of Bali. About 45-75 minutes by boat from Nusa Dua (depending on dive site). There are multiple dive sites - most popular include Nusa Penida North Coast (from Sakenan Mangrove to Tugu), Manta Point and Crystal Bay.

Type of Dive: Reef, wall and drift, all dives are by boat.

Depths: 8-40 meters.

Current: Mild to extremely strong.

Visibility: 10-35 meters.

Experience Level: Open water and advanced.

Topography: Slope, reef, rock and cave. Both beautiful above water and underwater scenery. Types of corals include, but not limited to, basked, soft, robust staghorn, delicate whip, sea fans, solid table, brain, spiral wire, dome and leafy crater.

Marine Life: You find just about everything in Nusa Penida depending on the dive site and depth. Sharks, manta rays, sting rays, moray eels, sea eagles, lion fish, turtles, mola-mola (giant sunfish), chevron barracuda, pufferfish, giant trevally, nudibranch, groupers, lobster, titan triggerfish, schools of longfin bannerfish, a large assortment of pelagics and more.

Highlights: Nusa Penida is home to some of the healthiest corals in Bali. Beautiful white beaches and clear aquamarine water. Crystal Bay and Blue Corner find the mola-mola abundant in season (August to October) and Manta Point is famous for its giant manta rays. Crystal Bay is also famous for its Bat Cave where you can surface inside the cave. The North Coast has some of the best drift diving in all of Bali.

Comments: This is one of the best dive areas in all of Bali. However, at certain times some dive sites cannot be accessed due to tides, strong swells and currents, so you will need to be flexible in your dive plan. Some areas are only for very experienced divers (for example, Blue Corner).

Location: East coast of Bali. Dive sites include Jepun, Blue Lagoon and Tanjung Sari.

Type of Dive: Slope and sandy bottom. Dives are by boat. Depths: 6-40 meters.

Current: Mild.

Visibility: 6-15 meters.

Experience Level: Open water.

Topography: Hard coral and soft coral, including staghorns, hug coral bommies, leather and hydroids. The coral is healthy and the water is crystal clear. Bright white sand.

Marine Life: A great variety of marine life including moray eels, magnificent anemones, sea squirts, leafy scorpionfish, angel fish, stone fish, cruise crocodile long toms, octopus, cat sharks, nurse sharks, wobbegongs, reef sharks, turtles and an abundance numerous types of tropical fish. You may also spot the occasional ocean sunfish (Mola-Mola).

Highlights: Pura Jepun lies 50 meters off shore directly in front of the shrine after which it was named. The reef starts at 10 meters and the slope will take you down to 20 meters after which it levels out at 40 meters. Tanjung Sari is one of the most surprising dives as it has a distinct population of various types of sharks. Blue Lagoon is protected and shallow.

Comments: Good diving all year round but surface conditions can be rough. Also, sometimes there are strong currents and swells coming from the Lombok Strait, creating unpredictable water movements. ​

Location: East coast of Bali. Sites include Tepekong, Mimpang and Biaha.

Type of Dive: Reef, slope and canyon.

Depths: 5-40 meters.

Current: Strong and sometimes unpredictable.

Visibility: 10-30 meters. Experience Level: Advanced only.

Topography: Spectacular diving site with large acropora table and leather corals. The corals in this area are very healthy, although in some areas they are low, dense and stunted because they are exposed to strong currents and big swells. These dive sites are famous for their reefs and interesting underwater landscapes. There are large coral formations, boulders and even a 15 meter hole to swim through (the “Blue Hole”) if conditions are right. Marine Life: Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! This area is a great place to find the larger pelagics – sharks, turtles, giant cuttlefish and very large sweetlips. Also, tuna, lionfish, scorpionfish, stingrays, long fin banner fish, schooling batfish and triggerfish are commonly seen. All three dive sites have a multitude of reef fish and many large visitors from the deeper depths of the ocean, including occasional dolphins.

Highlights: Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! This is a spectacular dive site for the larger pelagics.

Comments: The coral walls are steep and the current is cold. The canyon is also called “the toilet” by the locals as currents can be very strong with a down-pull when there is a surface swell. The Candidasa dive sites are for experienced divers only, due to the challenging and frequently unpredictable currents and surges. We require that divers have a minimum of Advanced Open Water certification, 50 logged dives and strong current diving experience in order to dive this area. Surface conditions can also be rough and challenging.

Location: North east coast of Bali. Amed is a small and quiet fishing village which is only a 15 minute drive from Tulamben. Dive sites include drop off, shore dive and the big tree drift dive (dive starts at the big tree).

Type of Dive: Reef, wall and drift. Both shore and boat diving.

Depths: 5-25 meters.

Current: None to mild.

Visibility: 15-25 meters.

Experience Level: Introductory and open water.

Topography: The black sand slopes are gentle and full of a multitude of fantastic coral formations. Coral types include, but not limited to, basked, sea fans, table, leather staghorn, fine table and tube. Marine Life: There is a wide variety of marine life including trumpet fish, pacific lion fish, stone fish, spiny lobster, long-finned batfish, banner fish, trigger fish, angel fish, barracuda and many turtles. Sometimes you will also find the occasional white tipped reef shark.

Highlights: Amed makes for both a great snorkeling and diving site, for both beginners and advanced divers. The coral formations are stunning and photographers will love this dive site. The corals are at shallow enough depths to provide excellent light for great pictures. Also a treasure for macro photography.

Comments: Frequented less than its sister dive site in Tulamben, Amed is definitely worth a visit. If you're doing two dives at Tulamben it's well worth it to add a third dive to your day in Amed on the way home or just spend the whole day diving there.

Visibility: 10-30 meters.

Experience Level: Introductory to advanced.

Topography: Slope, wall and reef. Sponge coral, giant sea fans, robust staghorn coral, blue sea star, feather star, vase sponges, table coral and soft colourful corals.

Marine Life: Large batfish, angel fish, trumpet fish, puffer fish, moray eels, lion fish, scorpion fish, morish andaman, sweetlips, sea cucumber, spanish dancers, ember parrotfish, bumphead parrotfish, masked porcupine fish, cleaner wrasse, lined sturgeonfish, yellow back fusilier, lined butterfly fish, angel fish, trigger fished, clown anemone fish, spotted garden eel, baracuda, turtles, reef sharks and whale sharks.

Highlights: This is one of the favourite dive sites of the owners of JSM. There is an unbelievable diversity of marine life. The USAT Liberty shipwreck is an incredible dive and some of the ship's guns even remain intact. When the ship sank it was broken into two pieces, so even beginners can explore the inside of the ship and still have a clear view of the surface. Diverse coral now covers the ship. The beautiful wall dive about a kilometer from the shipwreck in front of the Mimpi hotel is a gentle dive with a wide variety of coral and fish. Batu Kelebit is an excellent dive where you may see the occasional whale shark. At Kubu, there is a stunning white fan coral at 35 meters. The night diving is exceptional.

Comments: This site also makes for great snorkeling and skin diving as the highest point of the shipwreck is about 4 meters below the surface so even snorkelers can view parts of the ship from the surface. One word of caution, rocks can be sharp and the volcanic rocks on the beach can make entering and exiting the water quite a challenge.

Location: Small island off the north-west coast of Bali. Part of the West Bali National Park. Dive sites include: Pos I, Pos II, Eel Garden, Coral Garden, Anker Line and Bat Caves. It is about a 45 minute boat ride from the harbour of Labuan Lalang, depending on your site destination.

Type of Dive: Reef, drop-off, wall and slope. All dives are by boat.

Depths: 5-40 meters.

Current: Mild.

Visibility: 15-30 meters.

Experience Level: Pos I, Pos II, Eel Garden and Coral Garden – Open Water. Anker Wreck and Bat Caves – Advanced.

Topography: Giant sea fans, black, grain, giant gorgonian, mushroom, long arm featherstar and staghorn corals.

Marine Life: Giant moray eels, devil scorpion fish, white-tipped reef sharks, turtles, yellow tail tuna, barracuda, bump-head parrotfish, napoleon fish, giant trevely, giant triggerfish, yellow masked angel fish, black & white snapper, red-toothed trigger fishes, scorpion fish, squirrel fish, butterfly fish, fusiliers, anemone, and garden eels. If you’re lucky you may even see the occasional dolphin.

Highlights: Famous for wall diving. The walls descend to various depths up to 60 meters. Menjangan is a great site for photographers with a wide variety of fish from small anemones to large sharks. It’s good for beginner and advanced divers alike, offering a number of dive sites depending on skill level. This is also a great site for snorkeling.

Comments: About a 30 minute drive from Menjangan is Secret Bay which is an interesting muck diving site and worth a visit for macro-photographers on the way home if you’re coming from the south of Bali.
